Dave Hughes: Dry as a Bone

18 September 2015 , Posted by Ros Fuller

Dave Hughes is one of Australia’s most loved comedians. You can’t get more Australian with his thick Aussie drawl and dry sense of humour. However, what a lot of people don’t realise is that he had a time where he really needed support with his mental health and knew he had to say something.

When Hughes was on the ABC’s Q&A, program he revealed he quit smoking and drinking at age 22 after suffering from depression.

After going through a rough patch Hughes ended up building up the courage to say something to his Mum. He said “Mum, I think I have schizophrenia”. His mum then suggested they go to the doctor and was then advised he should stop smoking and drinking.

He talks about how it was a hard thing to say something at first, but as soon as he told people he felt like he was on the road to getting better.

Whether you ever feel like you need to tell someone you want help or maybe you will be the person someone chooses to talk with, Dave’s experience shows how important it is to follow through and seek support. That one conversation can be the start of everything being turned around.
