How do you sleep when you are used to sleeping next to your partner? Many men and women have difficulties with this as you feel safe and comfortable while sleeping next to your partner it can often be difficult to get a good nights’ sleep without them.
Top tips to getting a good nights sleep whether you’re a partner at home or a FIFO worker at camp:
- Sleep with a sound machine or other white noise: Try out one when you know you’re going to have trouble sleeping, like when your partner’s away. They can be downloaded onto your smart phone and have been shown to help even people with sleeping difficulties get to sleep faster.
- Try sleeping in the middle of the bed: Most people tend to have their “sides of the bed” and like to stick to it, those of you who can adjust might enjoy this one. Sleeping in the middle of the bed, can make your bed seem smaller and gives you more room to move around throughout the night.
- Have a bedtime routine, such as washing your face, brushing your teeth, 10 minutes of yoga/meditation, locking up the house etc all calming things to let your body and mind know you are ready for bed.
- Work Out: Exercising regularly helps you get a better nights sleep as long as you don’t exercise too close to going to bed.
- Save your bed for only sleep and sex, if you do other things such as browse online, watch TV or work your brain is used to being stimulated not relaxed.
- Alcohol can affect your sleep! Although it may make you sleepy at first once it wears off you will wake up more often during the night and get a poor quality of sleep.
- Drink tea before bed. A cup of chamomile tea before bed can put you in a natural state of calmness and ease, which is probably exactly what you’re looking for.
