Christmas Can Be Tough

If you’re onsite and not home for Christmas, it can be tough. Missing out on your family gatherings, or watching your kids open their presents and celebrating with your friends can be hard. You can feel far away and wonder why you’re doing FIFO.

For most, the first Christmas away is the toughest.

What helps? Here are some tips:

– If you know you’re going to be absent, make sure you have presents for the people you care most about ready for them. You’ll enjoy thinking about them opening them!

– Bring some special Christmas things you like to site (food you like, Christmas music, or decorations for your donga).

– Talk to your workmates about how it is for them (they probably feel like you).

– Organise some fun after work (here’s your chance to dress up as Santa!).

– Skype your family and friends if you can, SMS them if you prefer. Make sure to keep in touch.

– Make the most of the special food and activities on the day.

For many, Christmas can be a lonely time. While others seem happy sharing time with family and friends, it can feel lonely if you don’t have family or don’t get on with them. It can be a time of missing people, and missing out on what others are enjoying.

There are always places to go and people to talk to if Christmas is getting you down.

Mission Australia’s annual Christmas Lunch in the Park celebrates 38 years this year. It’s the biggest community event in Perth and you can help out or just come along and enjoy the lunch.

Christmas Lunch in the Park aims to make sure everyone has something special to do this December 25.

It’s for all walks of life and is held in Wellington Square in East Perth from 11.30am to 2pm. There are free buses running to and from Wellington Street Bus Station from 10.30am.

Thousands of people will share in a special lunch, fun and a visit from Santa.

If you’re in the northern suburbs, you can go along to the Joondalup Christmas Lunch. It’s just a 5-minute walk from the Joondalup Train Station. Call 0466 252 076

Everyone is welcome!
