Counselling…is it for me?
Maybe you have been for counselling before or maybe you have heard about it, but aren’t sure.
I often see people who have never been to see a counsellor. I can tell how nervous they are and do my best to put them at ease. I have become affectionately known (I think!) as ‘the shrink lady’ around many sites!
You might think counselling is only for people who are in crisis, are weak in some way, can’t cope and definitely not for guys!
Let’s clarify a few issues. Most people who initiate counselling are not ‘crazy’ or suffering from a mental illness. They are experiencing challenges in life that they are finding difficult, which let’s face it is true for most of us at some time.
It could be work related or personal and often the issues are cumulative and pile up. The FIFO lifestyle can also cause additional stress or ‘turn the volume up’ on existing difficulties. Everyone has a ‘tipping point’ when it all becomes too much.
So how does counselling work?
- Counselling is when you set aside time in order to explore difficulties which may include your emotions andThe counsellor helps you to see things more clearly and possibly from a different view-point.
- The counsellor might provide ideas, suggestions, and strategies that you have not thought of and which could help your situation. They can help you to focus on feelings, experiences or behaviour and make positive change
- A professional counsellor listens to you, helps you to consider options and work out the best solution for you. They do not judge, criticise or give you their opinion or advice.
- A good counsellor will gain your trust and build your confidence. Confidentiality is very important and professional counsellors will have a policy on this.
