Alcohol and other Drug issues are not specific to FIFO workers but due to the difficulties face by FIFO workers the industry records a higher than average rate of short-term risky drinking with 9 per cent drinking high levels of alcohol at least monthly. Research has also shown 12 per cent of the mining industry workforce engages in illicit drug use.

Working away and needing support with your alcohol or other drug use is difficult. It may feel like it would be impossible to receive any support as you are working in an isolated environment there certainly would not be a service you could go to.
