You FIFO folk spend a lot of your life at work!
So if you are bored, too hot, the flies are getting you down, the other guys are irritating the hell out of you and your supervisor is driving you crazy, its time to do something.
- Get really clear on what the problem is and what you would make a difference or what you would really like to be doing. (Check out the blog 5 Steps to Solving a Problem).
- Talk to your supervisor or HR about the aspects of your job that you find challenging. It maybe possible to make some changes.
- If it is a manager or colleague that is causing a problem then it could be useful to talk to HR or a more senior manager. Again there maybe a solution to this such as changing swings or crews.
- Make the most of every opportunity for training. The more tickets, certificates and other qualifications you gain the more versatile you are and the more choice you will have.
- Try to have a positive attitude and be a team player. You need to behave in the way that you want to be treated.
- What job would you really like to be doing? Set some goals and talk with your manager/HR about the skills, experience and qualifications needed to achieve this. For example you might want to be a supervisor or work in a completely different area. Get support to work out the pathway.
- Quit your job but not in a fit of temper or despair! Make sure you have really thought this through and discussed it with your loved ones. This is especially so in a downturn when alternative jobs maybe in short supply.
- If you decide to look for another job, prepare a resume and covering letter, get help if need be to make sure it is up to date and professional.
- Speak with someone and get support such as a career counsellor, EAP or recruitment agency.
- Take action otherwise nothing will change.
