Texts and other forms of miscommunication

Sam and Royce speak of the importance of good communication and how easy it is for mis-understandings to occur when you are apart.

In the interview Royce gives a really good example of how a text sent when he was stressed and in a hurry was felt by Sam as abrupt and even angry.

Long periods with no communication possible at all can also lead to partners worrying about the safety of their loved one or dwelling on ‘upsets’.

As human beings we are quick to ‘make up stories’ and we are excellent at interpretations and assumptions. Is the message sent in fact the message received, because it can sure get scrambled.

Doing Fifo means mobile phone calls, text and email is heavily relied upon as the main forms of communication. Skype if you are lucky and have good internet/mobile reception maybe possible too. However when we can’t see the person we have no non-verbal clues such as a facial expression or gesture. So we have to rely heavily on the spoken or written word.

Choose them carefully!

Many tell me good communication is the absolutely critical ingredient to making FIFO work well so share some of your tips which might help others to improve their skills and relationships!
